 Beyond BeijingBy Kathy Feeney When President Richard M. Nixon visited China in 1972, he was asked what he thought about the Great Wall. It's a Great Wall, Nixon quipped. For Americans who grew up picturing China as the land of the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square, Beijing is definitely worth a visit. But if your clients really want to experience China, send them beyond Beijing, said Stacy McGihon of Wilderness Travel in Berkeley, Calif. China has more to offer than cities and the cultural aspect. There are actually outdoor things to do here, McGihon said at the Hunan Pipaxi Hotel in Zhangjiajie. Most Americans don't consider China a place that you can go hiking or river rafting. Most people only think of China as a place to see the Great Wall and learn about the history and the politics. So I think its wonderful to have an area in China that is starting to develop tourism in a totally different aspect, where you have forests and wildlife, and hiking and that kind of outdoor activity. Its a nice alternative. Where to Stay Beijing The four-star Beijing Xindadu Hotel is about an hour from the airport with a taxi averaging about $20. The hotel's 400 guest rooms are equipped with central air conditioning, color TV, a mini bar and a security system. Amenities include restaurants, shops, an indoor pool, sauna, massage and a fitness center. Standard room rates start at $90. The hotel is within a tour bus drive of Beijing's major attractions. |
